Stay Positive During a Job Search
A job search is stressful. It’s universally listed as one of life’s top 10 stressors. And that is when life is considered normal. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the anxiety surrounding a job search is even greater. It is forcing everyone to reevaluate their personal and professional views. Some are rising to the challenge while others are struggling with it. If you’re currently looking for a new role, below are some suggestions to help you stay positive during a job search.
The main thing to assess is your mindset. Two people in the same situation may look at it very differently. Neither person is right or wrong. It simply illustrates that we each have a way of viewing the world around us, and we have the power to change that view. A recent article from Korn Ferry highlights some of the mindsets and emotions people are demonstrating right now.
Calm
This mindset is focused on the temporary nature of what we’re facing. We will get through it and we’ll be okay. It takes a big picture or long-term view to keep everything in perspective.
Adventurous
This mindset is proactive. It takes a positive view of the adjustments we’ve all had to make. For example, take on tasks that have been put off or start a new project or hobby with the extra time we have.
Depressed
This mindset is looking at the present moment and seeing the uncertainty. One concern with this mindset is not moving forward. People feel overwhelmed and not sure where to begin.
Freaked Out
This mindset takes the depressed mindset a step further and only focuses on the worst possible outcomes. Additionally, it can manifest physical symptoms as well, making us feel unwell.
It is likely that everyone going through a job search experiences each of these emotions to varying degrees at different times. It depends on what we choose to focus on at that moment. Yes, things are uncertain, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, the greatest leaps we make are those that are unexpected. There is a lot we can’t control, so it’s best to focus on what we can control.
Stay Active
Set up tasks, both professional and personal, everyday and keep checking them off your list. Simply being productive can improve your mood and give you a different perspective on your situation.
Exercise
Go for a bike ride, a run, or even just walking. Getting your heart rate up and releasing endorphins improves your overall mood and can combat depression. Any type of physical activity you enjoy can help you get out of a rut.
Create a Routine
While we all like spontaneity at times, we thrive day-to-day when we have a comfortable routine, just look at parents during back to school time. Create a new routine during your search that keeps you focused on growing and learning.
Have Fun
Conducting a job search doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy yourself. Spend time on a hobby you love or have been meaning to take up. Painting, writing, or training for a Tough Mudder style race. Whatever excites you, go for it. If you have kids, look for fun ways to spend time with them. Getting creative keeps your brain engaged.
Be Social
Now is not the time to shut yourself off because you may be feeling down. It’s actually the time to be more social than usual. See if friends and acquaintances could meet for a walk or if possible an outdoor coffee. Use Zoom, Skype, or other video tools to meet with people virtually. Staying connected to others will improve your mood.
