LinkedIn Tips for Executives
As an executive, you understand the ins and outs of an active and passive job search. You are also going to be strategic about who you inform when you are looking. When you want to signal to executive recruiters that you are open to a new opportunity you may look to LinkedIn to refresh your profile knowing that this has become a default platform used by recruiters. So what are some LinkedIn tips for executives to attract executive recruiters?
A recent Forbes article highlights three LinkedIn profile tips that executives can use to help with their job search.
Build your network
This one should go without saying. If you haven’t built and maintained a strong network of executive recruiters with expertise in your industry or your profession (accounting, marketing, etc…) then you need to get started immediately. This is important not just for the relationships but because if these recruiters are outside of your third-degree connections, they may never see your profile on LinkedIn. This is because many of these executive recruiters use the LinkedIn service, Recruiter Lite, which only allows them to go three levels deep in their contacts.
You can search LinkedIn for executive recruiters who specialize in your niche or your industry and include your title. See what results come up, if you have any second-degree connections to those to who you have not connected already, invite them to connect.
Have a professional photo
When many executives work on their profile, they tend to think about their accomplishments and how to convey who they are through the words on the page. What they don’t always think about is their profile photo and what it says about them. It should go without saying that you should use a current photograph of yourself. And it should be professionally taken. This is the first visual impression you make on others and is worth the money to do it the right way.
According to the article, “What you are wearing should align with the feel and culture of the niche or industry you are in. It seems like a small thing, but a good photo with professional lighting sends the right message at the first glance.”
Be thoughtful about your headline and keywords
LinkedIn is a software platform and has millions of users. Finding the best result for a search is going to come down to an algorithm. If you want to rank highly for a specific type of search, type it in and look at the results. Are there common words or phrases that all of the top results contain? You need to organically work in keywords to your headline and summary statement. This is true even if you are confidentially searching. You can still work to include keywords in your accomplishments.
These LinkedIn tips for executives are a great starting point. As you can imagine, there is a lot more work that goes into creating and maintaining your LinkedIn profile so you can draw executive recruiters to you.
